BJP accuses Sonia Gandhi of ties to Soros-backed group advocating Kashmir independence
New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday accused former Congress president Sonia Gandhi of having ties to an organization funded by the George Soros Foundation, which has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation, media reports said.
The ruling party claimed in a series of posts on X that this connection reflects the influence of foreign entities on India’s domestic matters.
Amid these allegations, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey reveealed plans to question Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Dubey accused the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Hungarian-American businessman George Soros of conspiring with the Opposition to undermine India’s economy and tarnish the Modi government’s image, news agency PTI reported.
The BJP stated that Sonia Gandhi, as co-president of the Forum of the Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, is linked to an organization financed by the Soros Foundation.
“Notably, the FDL-AP Foundation has expressed views treating Kashmir as a separate entity,” the party alleged.
“This association between Sonia Gandhi and an organization that has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation underscores the influence of foreign entities on India’s internal affairs and the political ramifications of such ties,” the BJP added.

The party also claimed that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, under Sonia Gandhi’s chairmanship, partnered with the Soros Foundation, “demonstrating the impact of foreign funding on Indian organizations.”
The BJP further alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s press conference on Adani was broadcast live by the Soros-funded OCCRP, which he cited as a source to criticize the business conglomerate.
“This shows nothing but their strong and dangerous relationship and highlights their attempts to derail the Indian economy,” the BJP said.
The party also pointed to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s acknowledgment of Soros as an “old friend,” calling it “noteworthy.”
These allegations followed the BJP’s earlier claim that the US "deep state" collaborated with OCCRP and Rahul Gandhi to damage India’s reputation.
The US embassy responded on Saturday, rejecting the BJP's allegations. A spokesperson described the claims as "disappointing" and reiterated the US government’s support for media freedom globally.
Reacting to this statement, Dubey said, “Yesterday I read the statement of the US embassy officials again and again. They admitted that the US government funds OCCRP, and Soros’ foundation also funds it.”

He accused OCCRP and Soros of attempting to destabilize India’s economy and defame the Modi government in coordination with opposition leaders.
“After yesterday's statement, I will have to ask Rahul Gandhi my 10 questions in the Lok Sabha. The opposition is trying to suppress my voice in Parliament. Lok Sabha Rule 357 gives me the right to ask questions. Waiting for tomorrow,” Dubey posted on X in Hindi.
The BJP has also highlighted Rahul Gandhi’s reliance on OCCRP reports to criticize the Adani Group.
“It’s disappointing that the ruling party in India would make these kinds of accusations,” the US embassy spokesperson said.
“The US government works with independent organizations to support professional development and capacity-building training for journalists. This programming does not influence the editorial decisions or direction of these organizations,” the official clarified.
OCCRP, headquartered in Amsterdam, is a media platform primarily focused on exposing crime and corruption globally.
