Bilaspur tragedy: 4 docs suspended, PM asks Raman to conduct thorough probe
Bilaspur, Nov 11 (IBNS): Following the death of eight women due to the sterilization surgery at a camp in Bilaspur, the Chhattisgarh government has suspended four doctors for medical negligence in connection with the case, reports said.
An FIR has also been registered against these doctors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, spoke to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh about the tragedy.
He has directed Singh to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted in the case.
“The PM spoke to Chhattisgarh CM Dr Raman Singh on the unfortunate tragedy in Bilaspur. The PM expressed concern over the tragedy. The PM has asked Dr Raman Singh to ensure a thorough investigation & action in the entire issue,” the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a tweet.
According to reports, at least eight women died and over 15 others are in critical state after they underwent sterilization surgery at a camp organized by the Chhattisgarh government in Bilaspur.
These women underwent the surgery on Saturday as part of an annual “family planning” camp. These camps are held between October and February every year and women who go through the surgery are given Rs. 1,400.
Sources said these women started complaining of pain and fever on Monday. By evening, eight of them were dead.
Reports said as many as 83 women were operated upon in five hours at the camp held in the Takhatpur area of Bilaspur, about 110-km far from state capital Raipur.
A three-member panel has been set up by the government to investigate the matter.
The government also announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased women and Rs. 50,000 for others who are now undergoing treatment.
