Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir: Rahul Gandhi unfurls national flag at Srinagar's Lal Chowk

Srinagar: The 135-day-long 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', which was led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ended its last leg with the hoisting of the tricolor at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Sunday.

The hoisting of the national flag at Lal Chowk was in contrast to the original plan of Congress wherein Rahul Gandhi was supposed to unfurl the national flag at the party headquarter in Srinagar on Monday.

Congress communication-in-charge Jairam Ramesh said Jammu and Kashmir administration last evening allowed Rahul Gandhi to unfurl the national flag in Lal Chowk.

“Rahul Gandhi was supposed to unfurl the national flag on Jan 30th in the PCC office, since permission to do so elsewhere wasn’t given. Last evening, the state administration allowed him to do so in Lal Chowk, but under condition that it should be done today on 29th at end of BharatJodoYatra,” Jairam tweeted.

On Sunday morning, Rahul Gandhi unfurled the tricolour at Lal Chowk amid tight security.

His great grandfather Jawahar Lal Nehru had unfurled the tricolour 75 years ago at Lalchowk for the first time.

The unfurling of the national flag was accompanied with the playing of the national anthem.

"By hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk, the promise made to India was fulfilled today. Hate will lose, love will always win. There will be a new dawn of hope in India," Rahul tweeted.

Earlier today, the last leg of the yatra resumed from Srinagar’s Pantha chowk area .

There was a massive deployment of security forces in Srinagar and the roads leading to the yatra route were barricaded.

General Secretary of the Congress party Prinyanka Gandhi, Jammu and Kashmir affairs in-charge Rajni Patel, Jai Ram Ramesh, AICC J&K President Vikar Rasool and other senior leaders were also present during the ceremony.
