Bengaluru Floods: Wipro, Prestige, other big names whose buildings choked stormwater drains, says report

Bengaluru: Floods in India's silicon valley, Bengaluru, have shocked the entire nation that saw even the richest of the rich residents being rescued in boats as large stretches of the city remain submerged underwater. It has now been revealed that rainwater couldn't flow out as illegal construction has choked 700 stormwater drains in the city.

According to an NDTV report, high-profile builders, developers and tech parks are among the list of alleged encroachers. The list includes Wipro, Prestige, Eco Space, Bagmane Tech Park, Columbia Asia Hospital and Divyashree Villas, the report said.

While the demolition of common man's properties is going on in full swing, the big companies are yet to be touched, the report said.

The report said, citing engineers involved in the demolitions, that the big companies will also not be spared but the action hasn't started yet.

"We are moving one after the other. But there's a clear delay that we are seeing on the ground," one of the engineers was quoted as saying by NDTV.

However, demolition has been conducted at the premises of Nalapad Academy of International School in east Bengaluru, which belongs to Congress Youth President Mohammed Nalapad.

Malathi, the chief engineer in charge of the demolition blamed the revenue department. "We didn't know. This comes under the revenue department. They should have kept a check. Now we are demolishing the encroachment," she told NDTV.

The boundary wall of a four-storey building was razed in the eastern part of the city while the residents were inside.

Executive Engineer Muni Reddy told NDTV that the building had no sanctioned plan and the builder has flouted the laws and erected the building on a stormwater drain.

But building owner Dinesh Reddy claimed the construction was undertaken only after "all necessary permissions".

He said the storm drain had existed for years and the authorities granted permission despite knowing its location.
