Bengal post-poll violence: Calcutta HC orders state to register all cases, ensure free ration, treatment; show causes DCP Jadavpur over alleged attack on NHRC team
Kolkata/IBNS: Expressing its concern over the alleged attack on National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team investigating post-poll violence in West Bengal, a five-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Friday show caused Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police (South Suburban/Jadavpur Division), IPS Rashid Munir Khan over the city police's alleged inactivity during the assault on HC appointed fact-finding team members.
The larger bench also directed the state government to register all allegations of post-poll violence and to ensure free medical treatment as well as ration to all victims even if someone doesn't have a ration card.
Earlier on Tuesday (June 29) afternoon, an NHRC team probing the alleged post-poll violence in the state was reportedly gheraoed and heckled by locals while it was carrying out a ground survey at violence-hit Nilsangha area near KPC Medical College and Hospital in southern Kolkata's Jadavpur area.
National Commission for Minorities (NCM) vice-chairman Atif Rasheed, who was a part of the NHRC team, claimed that they had found nearly 40 houses were destroyed in the violence.
The NCM vice-chairman also alleged that very few local police personnel were present there and they were almost inactive during the attack.
Central force jawans, who were deployed for the team's security, safely took the team members out of the area.
The fact-finding committee recently submitted its interim report before the court and while hearing the matter on Friday, the larger bench issued the orders and show caused the IPS offical.
DC (SSD) Rashid Munir Khan has to explain the court why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him after the court-appointed team was attacked under his jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta HC has extended the the NHRC's investigation into the alleged post-poll violence in Bengal upto July 13.
The next hearing in the case will be held on July 13 while state's Chief Secretary has been directed to preserve all documents relating to the post-poll violence.
