New Delhi/IBNS: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday issued a show-cause notice against BJP candidate in Nandigram, Suvendu Adhikari, for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by delivering 'hate speech' during a public meeting in his assembly constituency on Apr 29, officials said.

According to sources in the ECI, Adhikari has been asked to explain his stand on the statement he made within the next 24 hours.

The poll body stated that the action had been taken against Suvendu Adhikari based on a complaint filed by CPI-ML Central Committee member, Kavita Krishnan.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Election Commission slapped a notice on West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee for demanding votes on communal ground and her explanation on the matter has been sought within 48 hours.
