Bandh in Assam protesting Citizenship Amendment Bill, vehicles damaged
Guwahati, Feb 13 (IBNS): Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continues in Assam as it is likely to be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
To register protest against the bill and the government’s move to grant ST status to six communities of the state, the tribal groups have also called a 12-hour Assam Bandh on Wednesday.
The Bandh was called by the Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA).
The protesters have burnt tyres on roads and pelted vehicles with stones during the bandh in many places in the state.
In central Assam’s Morigaon district, the protesters pelted stones and damaged a security vehicle at Jagiroad area.
They also burnt tyres on National Highway -37 and tried to stop vehicular movement.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was introduced and passed in Lok Sabha in January.
The bill is aimed to granting Indian citizenship to the Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
