Authorities issue flood alert in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Apr 6 (IBNS): Authorities in Kashmir issued flood advisory for south and central Kashmir residents after a rise in water levels of River Jhelum and its tributaries on Thursday.

According reports, due to heavy rain and snowfall in many parts of the valley since Tuesday water level in River Jhelum crossed the 18-feet mark at Sangam.

Senior official of the Irrigation and Flood Control department said, "We have issued the advisory after the water level in River Jhelum crossed the 18-feet mark at Sangam."

The water level in Jhelum River has reached the “flood declaration mark” of 18 ft at Ram Munshibagh in Srinagar, officials said on Thursday.

They said that the water level touched the mark at 6 pm.

Meanwhile, an order has been issued by Chief Engineer Mohammad Hanief Lone asking the people living along the embankments of river Jhelum/nallahs and low-lying areas of central Kashmir to remain vigilant.

Former chief minister of state Omar Abdullah took social site and wrote, “1st week of April & the day starts with Srinagar under a blanket of white snow/sleet. Saying its cold is an understatement right now."
