Attack on Muslim cleric who slammed Trinamool candidate Nusrat Jahan for temple run

Kolkata, May 17 (IBNS): Muslim cleric Maulana Sharif Pirzada Mohammed Khobayeb Amin, who had slammed Trinamool Congress candidate from West Bengal's Basirhat, Nusrat Jahan, for doing a temple run, was allegedly attacked by the party, media report said.

Amin was allegedly attacked by the Trinamool men on May 15. The cleric believes West Bengal's ruling party is behind the attack as he had revolted against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Jahan.

"Why does a Muslim candidate need to offer prayer in a temple to prove a secular image? Under threat from BJP did Mamata make Nushrat Jahan act in a temple?" Amin had asked as quoted by Times Now.

The cleric alleged that Jahan acted so to gain political points and to fool Hindus.

Though state minister and Trinamool strong man, Firhad Hakim, went down to Amin to give up his anger, the cleric demanded an apology from Jahan, who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls for the first time.

Jahan, a popular Tollywood actress, is yet to apologise.

The cleric also said Muslims will take out a protest against Banerjee in Kolkata after May 23 (day on which votes will be counted) irrespective of the poll results.

Trinamool chief Banerjee has replaced outgoing Basirhat MP Idris Ali with Jahan, who is one of the two contemporary Tollywood actresses contesting the polls, as her candidate for Basirhat.

Basirhat- which has 56 per cent Muslim population- will go to polls in the last phase of polls on May 19.
