Thakurnagar, Feb 2 (IBNS): At least 16 people were injured after a stampede-like situation occurred at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in West Bengal's Thakurnagar on Saturday.

The incident forced PM Modi to cut his election-like speech short.

Several women and children were injured in the commotion.

As Modi was addressing the rally of the Matua community, hundreds of supporters, standing outside the venue, tried to enter into the inner ring of the rally ground.

This led to a havoc commotion at the venue.

PM Modi also tried to pacify the crowd however his requests went unheard.

Several people started throwing chairs inside the no-man zone in front of the stage in an attempt to make space for others to stand in the inner ring.

Many injured women and children were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Modi attacks Mamata Banerjee at Bengal rally:

In one of the sharpest attacks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in recent times, Modi called the ruling TMC government as opposed to poor people as it has withdrawn the state from Centre's newly-launched health scheme Ayushman Bharat.

The Prime Minister, while addressing a rally in steel-city Durgapur on Saturday, said Mamata got scared after a person, who got cured due to Ayushman Bharat (healthcare scheme), praised Modi.

Referring to the West Bengal Chief Minister's decision to pull the state out of Ayushman Bharat, Modi said: "West Bengal could've been the largest beneficiary of Ayushman Bharat. But, the local government snatched it from the poor people of Bengal."

"A government which betrays the poor can never benefit anyone. Those who play with the lives of the poor should be punished," he added while attacking the TMC government.

Ayushman Bharat was started by the BJP government on Sept 23, 2018.
