Assam : Three people, including 18-month-old, die in fire in commercial building

Guwahati, Aug 22 (IBNS)  : Three people of a family, including an 18-month-old child, died and three others were  injured in a major fire that broke out in a commercial building in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district on Tuesday  night.

The incident took place at SM road in Sualkuchi town. The fire that started in the ground floor of Achyut Plaza, leapt up and engulfed the building up to the third floor.

It is suspected that the fire was caused by a short circuit in a silk shop in the ground floor of the building.

Locals immediately informed the police and fire tenders rushed to the spot to bring the blaze under control.

“Four fire tenders were engaged in dousing the fire. Local people also helped us to control the blaze,” a police officer of Sualkuchi police station said.

The proprietor of the building, 75-year-old Lohit Kakoti, his daughter 28-year-old Kabita Mahanta and her one and half-year-old son Mayukh Dev Mahanta  died in the fire incident.

The other members of the family received severe injuries and they were admitted to a private hospital in Guwahati in critical condition.

The proprietor lived in  the third floor of the building with his family.

Property, estimated to be worth more than  Rs 65 lakh ,gutted in the fire.
