Assam: Police arrest most wanted rhino poacher along with arms

Guwahati/IBNS: Continuing its anti-poaching operation, police arrested a most wanted rhino poacher along with arms in Assam’s Nagaon district on Saturday.

Based on an intelligence input regarding poaching activities in Kaziranga National Park, a team of Nagaon district police launched operation in the area of Harmoti under Jakhalabandha police station at about 2-30 am on Saturday and arrested a most wanted rhino poacher.

The arrested poacher has been identified as Pradip Mura of Harmoti area.

The police team recovered one .303 rifle along with magazine and suppressor, eight rounds of live ammunition of .303 rifle, one point 22 rifle along with magazine in possession from the poacher.

A top police official said the arrested poacher planned to carry out poaching in the national park.

Poachers have killed three one horned rhinos in Kaziranga National Park in 2019.

Assam is a home to the largest population of greater-one horned rhinos, with more 2600 rhinos.

The Rhino Population Estimation report, 2018 stated that, total number of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park counted 2,413 rhinos.
