Assam: Miscreants damage statue of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Sonowal orders action against culprits

Guwahati, Mar 14 (IBNS): After Kolkata, unidentified persons now damaged and defaced a statue of BJP ideologue Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

The incident took place at Rabindra Nagar area in Kokrajhar town on Tuesday night.

Police has started investigation, but failed to arrest any person involved with it.

Local people condemned the act and demanded the arrest of the culprits.

The incident follows toppling of damaging statues of Communist icon Vladimir Lenin in Tripura, social reformer Periyar in Tamil Nadu, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal strongly condemned the act of vandalism.

In a statement, the Assam CM said that the incident is very condemnable and the Government would not tolerate such incidents.

He directed the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Kokrajhar district to take stern action and book the miscreants who were involved in the act under relevant provisions of law.

He also directed the administration to step up vigil and take all necessary measures to prevent such acts of vandalism.
