Assam flood: Over 8.69 lakh people affected, death toll rises to six
Guwahati, Jul 12 (IBNS): The flood situation in Assam has taken a deadly turn as it affected over 8.69 lakh people of 21 out of 33 districts in the state.
Three more persons have lost their lives due to flood and landslide incident in the past 24 hours in the state taking the total death toll to six.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 21 districts of the state submerged by flood waters of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries by affecting over 8.69 lakh people of 1556 villages.
The affected districts are – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hojai, Nagaon, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.
Three more persons have lost their lives due to flood and landslide in Golaghat and Dima Hasao districts in the last 24 hours.
The Brahmaputra river in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri districts, Burhidehing in Dibrugarh, Desang in Sivasagar, Dhansiri in Golaghat, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili in Nagaon, Puthimari in Kamrup, Beki River in Barpeta, Katakhal in Hailakandi and Kushiyara in Karimganj districts are flowing above the danger level.
NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood-affected areas for search and rescue operation.
68 numbers of relief camps are operational in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Baksa, Nalbari, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts with 7,643 inmates and 48 Relief Distribution Centres in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat and Tinsukia districts.
On the other hand, the flood waters have forced the railway authority to control train services due to the settlement of tracks in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section and the NF Railway has cancelled and short terminated several trains.
According to the NF Railway authority, due to heavy rain, the railway track has been affected at km 110/4-5 between Jatinga Lumpur – New Harangajao station in Lumding – Badarpur hill section under Lumding division of N.F. Railway.
The settlement occurred at about 09-30 am on Friday making it unsuitable for train movement.
Meanwhile, railway authority has made provision for adequate drinking water for all passengers of short-terminated trains at respective stations.
