New Delhi/UNI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday demanded the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, for environmentalist and chipko movement pioneer Sunderlal Bahuguna.

"Bahuguna was known all over the world and the entire world is proud of him. We demand from the Central Government and PM that Sunderlal Bahuguna be awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously," Kejriwal said during an event at the Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister unveiled a portrait of Bahuguna and planted saplings in the complex.

Bahugana died in May this year at the age of 94 due to illness.

He fought against deforestation and construction of dams.

The chipko movement led by him became a popular agitation around the world.
