Kolkata, Aug 3 (IBNS): Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, GOC-in-C Eastern Command, on Wednesday felicitated Army’s outstanding achievers in sports at a ceremony held at Fort William, Kolkata.

Naib Subedar Unnikannan, Havildar K. Siva Kumar and Rifleman Umesh Rai were among 14 summiteers who were a part of the 30 member Indian Army Everest Massif Expedition Team 2016.

The team conquered the world’s highest mountain peak on 19 & 20 May 2016.  In an earlier attempt the team was stuck at Everest base camp due to a massive earthquake in Nepal during April 2015.

These three members of the team were also part of the rescue operation undertaken by the Indian Army immediately after an avalanche hit the base camp following the earthquake.

Naib Subedar Unnikannan, Havildar K. Siva Kumar and Rifleman Umesh Rai have earlier summited Mt Stok Kangri, Mt Machoi, Mt Friendship and number of other peaks with heights of over 7,000 mtrs.

Two outstanding boxers of Army’s Eastern Command were also felicitated. Havildar Amrik Singh and Rifleman Bibek Subba have won gold medals in ‘heavy weight’ and ‘fly weight’ category in the recently concluded Army Boxing Championship in July 2016. Rifleman Bibek Subba was also adjudged  the ‘Best Boxer’ in Fly Weight category.
