Chennai, Feb 6 (IBNS): Late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa suffered cardiac arrest and it was witnessed, doctors who treated her said.

"Honourable Amma had sudden cardiac arrest, and it was witnessed," said a doctor during a press conference on Monday.

Doctor said no organ transplant or amputation was performed on Jayalalithaa.

"Honourable Amma died of sepsis," said a doctor.

Dr. Richard Beale said: "Honourable Amma was suffering from infection, sepsis set in, bacteria in blood subsequently attached to the heart."

"Bacterial infection in blood was underlying problem. Infection spread to organs, led to shortness of breath," he siad.

Speaking on the late Chief Minister, he said: "Honourable Amma was conscious, I spoke to Amma when Amma gave thumb impression for EC forms."

The doctors revealed information on Jayalalithaa's death at a time when her longtime companion Sasikala Natarajan is gearing up to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

She has been elected as the AIADMK Legislature Party Leader.

After Jayalalithaa's death in December last year, O Panneerselvam took oath as the CM of the state.

He has resigned from the post.
