Amid protests over Citizenship bill, PM Modi in northeast today
New Delhi, Feb 9 (IBNS): Amid protests over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the northeast on Saturday to inaugurate a number of projects.
Modi, who has already reached Arunachal Pradesh, is also visiting Assam and Tripura to give impetus to his party BJP's poll campaign ahead of the forthcoming General Elections, which is due to be held by May.
Modi will lay foundation stone for a Greenfield Airport at Itanagar, Sela Tunnel and North East Gas Grid. He will inaugurate DD Arun Prabha Channel and Garjee - Belonia Railway Line. He will also unveil several other development projects in the three states.
He said in his speech: Tezu airport was built over 50 years but no govt envisioned to connect people of this state with other parts of the country. We expanded the airport by spending around Rs 125 crore.

The Prime Minister was, however, shown black flags by protesters in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, on Friday. The students of Guwahati university showed black flags to the Prime Minister at Jalukbari area while Modi's convoy was passing the area to protest against the Citizenship Bill.

On the other hand, the activists of All Assam Students Union (AASU) also have shown black flags to the Prime Minister's convoy as it was passing by the AASU office at Uzanbazar area in Guwahati to Raj Bhawan.
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma had welcomed the Prime Minister at Borjhar airport.
The BJP is also facing the heat from its own allies in Assam over the citizenship bill.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 is aimed at granting Indian citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which was an ally in the BJP-led Assam government, broke up alliance with the saffron party in Assam after the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) had submitted their reports over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 before the parliament.
