Amid controversy, demand of NRC rises in Tripura, Meghalaya
Agartala/Shillong, Aug 2 (IBNS): Amid controversy over the release of Assam's National Register of Citizen (NRC), which excluded over four million people, demand to take such a step has been raised in two other northeastern states- Tripura and Meghalaya, media reports said.
The demand has been made by the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) in Tripura.
INPT president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhwal has been quoted by The Times Of India as saying, "The spirit of the NRC is in line with what the Constitution guarantees- protection of its citizens."
He added, "We will launch an agitation in Tripura, seeking an NRC for our state as well."
While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules Tripura, is not considering making NRC but its ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) demands such a step.
IPFT vice president Ananta Debbarma told media that his party will hold a mega rally in Khumulwng on Aug 23 over the demand of NRC.
In Meghalaya, the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) has called for the NRC like step in the hill state and also placed their demand before Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
The second and final draft of Assam's NRC, which was released on July 30, left out over four million people, triggering a massive political controversy.
The ruling BJP faced wrath from several opposition parties with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee even accusing the saffron outfit of leading to a situation of "civil war and bloodbath".
However, the Congress, the principal opposition party of the country, said it does not approve Mamata's comment on the NRC.
The Congress said all political parties should react responsible to this sensitive issue.
The Assam Accord (1985) was signed between the Government of India led by Rajiv Gandhi and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on 15 August 1985 after a six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).
