Alcohol ban in Bihar likely from next year

| | Nov 26, 2015, at 07:57 pm
Patna, Nov 26 (IBNS) A ban on alcohol may soon be clamped in in Bihar as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed his officials to take steps towards prohibition from next year.

"In 1977-78, we tried to impose prohibition but it was not effective. But I feel that women are suffering,"  Kumar said, adding: "I have instructed my officials to start working towards this and implement this from the next financial year."

This is the first major announcement by  Kumar since he was sworn in for the fifth time last week after a spectacular election victory.

However, it is not clear whether such a ban will cover all kinds of liquor or only country liquor.

Few months ago, Nitish Kumar had made a sort of promise to women who confronted him at a function and shouted complaints about liquor addiction in villages.  In response, the Chief Minister had said he would ban alcohol if he came to power again.
