AAP leaders meet Rajnath Singh on alleged police attempt to run over party leader
New Delhi, Jul 23 (IBNS) Leaders of Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday met Home Minister Rajnath Singh today amid a bitter standoff with the Delhi Police and Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.
Senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas said : "We spoke on the law and order situation and how there was an attempt to injure Dileep Pandey. We have given video evidence."
AAP leader Dilip Pandey has alleged that a Delhi Police van tried to run him over outside a police station in west Delhi on Tuesday night.
Delhi Police Chief BS Bassi said he would have the allegation investigated, while commenting that he has "never heard such a complaint in my life."
Few days ago Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also criticised the police over the brutal murder of a 19-year-old girl in west Delhi and raised the demand that the control over Delhi police be given to the city government instead of keeping it with the centre.
Since it came to power in February, AAP has been campaigning for the transfer of important departments that are not under the Delhi Government's control, including law and order, police and land.
Kejriwal's government is also embroiled in a turf war with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, the latest instance being cancellation of appointment of Swati Maliwal as thenew chief of the Delhi Commission of Women.
The AAP government appointed Maliwal, wife of a party leader, but the Lieutenant Governor blocked it on the grounds of "breach of rules and procedures."
To drive home that he is the authority in making appointments in high places Jung said that the "constitutionally valid and consistent definition of 'Government' is the Lieutenant Governor."
