41 per cent polling in UP, Manipur records 78 per cent till 2 pm

Lucknow/ Imphal, Mar 8 (IBNS) : Voting was well past midway in the last phase of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Manipur on Wednesday as respectively 41 and a record 78 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in the two states till 2 pm, reports said.

In the seventh and last lap of election, Uttar Pradesh goes to polls for 40 Assembly seats including those falling under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi Parliamentary constituency, while 22 seats are at stake in Manipur in the second and last phase.

Prominent candidates who are in fray in Uttar Pradesh, the state that has become the field for a fierce battle between the BJP and its rival forces,  include former Cabinet minister Om Prakash, Parasnath Yadav, Ajay Rai, former MP Dhananjay Singh, Sigbatullah Ansari brother of Mukhtar Ansari and Seema Singh wife of jailed mafia Munna Bajrangi.

A total of 1.41 crore voters, including 64.76 lakh women, are expected to vote to decide fate of 585 candidates.

Counting of votes polled in all the seven phases of the Assembly polls will be taken up on March 11.

In Manipur, large number of people thronged the booths making it a brisk polling all through the day.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, who is contesting from Thoubal seat, cast his vote at a polling booth.

Altogether 98  candidates, including rights activist Irom Sharmila, are in the fray in this phase.

The first phase polling to the 60-member Manipur Assembly was held on March 4 last.
