18 killed in Maharashtra train derailment

Raigad, May 4 (IBNS): At least 18 people were killed and several others were injured as the engine and four bogies of Diva-Sawantwadi Express train derailed between Nagothane and Roha stations in Raigad district of Maharashtra on Sunday, latest reports said.

The mishap occured at around 9:40 am.

“Nobody is trapped inside the coaches. All passengers were moved from the accident site by 11 am itself,” S.K. Sood, general manager Central Railway, told The Hindu 

According to reports, the incident occurred in a tunnel near Nidi village. 

The injured have been taken to a local hospital.

Railways Minister Mallikarjun Kharge  told media: "This incident should not have happened. We are deeply saddened by this mishap."

The minister also announced compensation of 2 lakh to the families of those killed in the mishap and Rs 50,000 compensation for those majorly  hurt  in the derailment.

He also announced a compensation of  Rs. 10,000 for   those passengers who sustained minor injuries.
