A day after the "Janata Curfew" and hours before the lockdown in 75 districts across the country, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said people were not taking lockdown seriously. 

Modi tweeted, "People are not taking lockdown seriously even now. Please save yourself, save your family and follow the instructions properly. I request the state government to make people follow the rules and laws,"

India records fifth Coronavirus-related death from Mumbai

Malaysia reports 4th death due to COVID-19, 153 new cases

Malaysia on Saturday announced the fourth death due to COVID-19, besides 153 newly confirmed cases to bring the total in the country to 1,183, according to the Health Ministry.

The fourth fatality was a 50-year-old Malaysian man who had attended a large scale religious event held near the capital of Kuala Lumpur from late February to early March, Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah told a press briefing.

Noor Hisham said of the new cases, at least 90 were traced to the same event.

Out of the total cases, 114 have been cured and discharged from hospital, while 37 are currently being held in intensive care and 23 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

Bangkok orders malls, markets closure as COVID-19 cases total 411

Bangkok's governor Asawin Kwanmuang on Saturday announced a 22-day closure of shopping malls, markets and beauty salons in the capital from March 22 to April 12 amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the governor, food zone and pharmacy in malls are excluded from the closure. Restaurants and food courts can only offer take-away with no diners allowed to be seated.

The City Hall has asked people not to stockpile food and consumer products in panic as restaurants and zones selling necessary consumer goods are still open.

"I'd like to ask for everyone's cooperation in every sector to keep a space of 1-to-2 meters to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading," the governor said in a live stream address on Saturday.

Israel reports 178 new coronavirus cases, 883 in total

178 more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Israel, bringing the total number of the cases to 883 in the country on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Health.

On Friday night, the first coronavirus patient, an 88-year-old man from Jerusalem, died in Israel.

Israel Prison Service has announced the release of 500 prisoners as part of the measures against the spread of COVID-19.

These prisoners are not considered dangerous, and have already served most of their prison term.

In a couple of tweets, Modi said, "Lots of my brothers and sisters are leaving cities where they work and travelling to their villages out of Coronavirus scare. The chances of spreading of the virus enhances with travelling in a crowd. Your travel will be a threat to the people of the villages where you are travelling to. West Bengal records fourth positive case

West Bengal has recorded its fourth positive case. The infected person is a resident of Dum Dum, a locality in north Kolkata. The patient has no travel history to any foreign country. 

Total number of coronavirus positive cases in Maharashtra has risen to 63 from earlier 52, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Saturday.

It is a "big rise" in the number of coronavirus positive patients with the addition of 11 such cases, Mr Tope said and appealed to the people to avoid using public transport to contain the spread.

All international flights to Guwahati airport as well as a number of domestic flights to Assam have been cancelled for the next week in view of the global Corona virus scare.

Druk Airways has cancelled its international flight from Paro and Singapore, via Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati, from today till March 29 next, an Airport Authority of India spokesperson informed here today.

These were the only international flights currently operational in the state.

The Indian Railways on Saturday urged people to avoid train travels as they may get infected by COVID 19 from their co-passengers.

The railways urged citizens to postpone all travels at present when the nation is witnessing surge in the number of Coronavirus cases over the past few days.

Railways said it noticed that some passengers, who traveled by train recently, tested positive for Coronavirus.

"Railways has found some cases of Coronavirus infected passengers in trains which makes train travel risky. Avoid train travel as you may also get infected if your co-passenger has Coronavirus. Postpone all journeys and keep yourself and your loved ones safe. #NoRailTravel," the Railways tweeted.

Twelve people, who recently trevelled in trains, tested positive for COVID 19, the Ministry of Railways said.

Railways said while eight passengers, who tested positive, had travelled from Delhi to Ramagundam on AP Sampark Kranti Express on Mar 13.

The other four passengers traveled on Godan Express from Mumbai to Jabalpur on Mar 16.

Two cleaning staff of Kolkata's Beliaghata ID hospital, where all three novel Coronavirus infected patients of West Bengal are undergoing treatments, have been admitted to the same hospital's isolation ward with Covid-19 symptoms, officials said on Saturday.

Sources in the hospital said that those middle-aged sweepers had been assigned to clean the isolation wards of Beliaghata ID hospital.

"Those cleaning staff, who were admitted on Saturday morning with Covid-19 symptoms including high body temperature and cough, are under surveillance in the isolation ward," a medical officer of Beliaghata ID hospital said.

"Their swab samples have been sent to NICED for Covid-19 test and the reports are expected tonight," the official added.

The Coronavirus, which is believed to have originated from China's Wuhan region, have now spread in different corners of the globe.

Four people have died due to Coronavirus in India so far.

COVID-19: Three more people in Karnataka test positive

With the three more persons tested positive for the dreaded COVID-19 virus, the total number of people infected for the coronavirus rose to 18 on Saturday.

In a tweeter message, the Health minister B Sreeramulu, who is also heading the task force against the menace of the spread of the COVID-19 disease, informed that three more persons, were tested positive on Saturday.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday said it will keep its service closed on Sunday.

In the wake of the COVID19 outbreak in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the nation to follow ‘Janata Curfew’ on Sunday.

DMRC tweeted: "In the wake of ‘Janta Curfew’ to be observed this Sunday i.e, on 22nd March 2020, DMRC has decided to keep its services closed. The move is aimed at encouraging public to stay indoors and maintain social distancing, which is essential in the fight against Covid-19. #JantaCurfew."

Amid the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, which claimed four lives so far and infected 186 people in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi  addressing the nation on Thursday urged all to adopt resolve and restraint to fight the menace of the virus and directed them to observe 'Janata curfew' coming Sunday by staying home, to help contain the infection spread. He also announced an economic task force to fight the economic challenge from the crisis.

Commencing his address, PM Modi said: "The present situation owing to Coronavirus is no better than World War I and II. India is fighting Coronavirus bravely. Everyone is doing his/her bit to combat the disease."

"At this hour of crisis, we need two tools: resolve and restraint to fight the menace," he said.

The eastern state of West Bengal on Friday reported the second positive Novel Coronavirus case as a 22-year old man has been infected with the deadly virus, media reports said.

The 22-year old came to Mumbai, India from England on Mar 13.

He then took a flight from Mumbai to Kolkata.

The patient is a resident of south Kolkata's Ballygunge.

The family members of the patient have been quarantined.

No international flights to land in India from Mar 22; Centre asks states to enforce work from home

The government said in an advisory, "No scheduled international commercial passenger aircraft shall be allowed to land in India from March 22, 2020 for one week."

In a major announcement, the Centre on Thursday requested the states to enforce work from home for private employees except for emergency services.

The state governments have been asked to issue directions so that citizens above 65 years of age remain indoors except for medical assistance. However, public representatives, government servants, medical professionals are exempted.

The Centre has also advised children below 10 years of age to stay at home.

The railways and civil aviation have been ordered to cancel all concessional travel except for students, patients and divyang category.

In another advisory, the government said, "To reduce crowding all Group B and Group C central government employees will be asked to attend offices on alternative week and staggered timings for all employees."

Curfew-like restrictions imposed in Srinagar to combat COVID-19

Curfew-like restrictions were imposed since early Thursday morning to contain the spread of coronavirus in the summer capital, Srinagar, which witnessed its first positive case on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, surveillance has been started within 300 meter radius of the area in which the woman, who tested positive for Coronavirus, lives in Khanayar in downtown Srinagar.

Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary said the restrictions on public gatherings, assembly and movement in many areas are aimed at avoiding spread of any likely cases.

Many roads in downtown, uptown and civil lines were sealed with barbed wires while security forces were directing people to remain indoors in these areas, asserting that curfew was imposed since early this morning.

First positive case reported in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh which has so far remained safe zone with regards to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) infection, reported first positive case of Coronavirus as a young woman who returned from London tested positive.

The young woman is currently admitted at isoltation ward in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur. AIIMS officials said that the young woman recently returned from London along with her parents. The young woman’s parents too have been kept at AIIMS isolation ward.

According to information available, the young woman is a resident of Raipur. She was admitted at AIIMS Raipur late Wednesday night. Her sample was collected on March 17 following deterioration of her health condition. The report of her sample came on March 18. The entire family of the woman is being monitored by doctors at isolated ward of AIIMS.

Meanwhile according to daily media bulletin released yesterday by State Surveillance Unit under Health and Family Welfare Department of Chhattisgarh, total 114 samples were collected from suspected Coronavirus patients in Chattisgarh for Coronavirus testing.

Of them 102 have tested negative while reports of 5 other samples are yet to be received.

Remaining seven samples were rejected as they do not come under ICMR parameters for COVID-19 tests.

Kolkata airport's immigration officers who checked Covid-19 infected youth sent to home quarantine

Two immigration officers posted at Kolkata international airport, who had reportedly checked West Bengal's first and so far only Covid-19 infected youth while he was returning home from London via Mumbai on the wee hours of Sunday (Mar 15), have been directed to stay in home quarantine for next 12 days, official said.

"As both of them were present in the immigration counter of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport (NSCBI-CCU) during the clearance of the 18-year-old Covid-19 victim and came in close contact with him, they have been asked to stay in home quarantine for next 12 days as a precautionary measure," a senior immigration official said.

The Covid-19 infected youth is currently undergoing treatment in a stable condition in Beliaghata ID hospital, and his parents and two drivers have been kept in hospital isolation while they were found negative for novel coronavirus after the first test on Wednesday.

In a tweet, PMO India wrote: "PM Shri @narendramodi will address the nation on 19th March 2020 at 8 PM, during which he will talk about issues relating to COVID-19 and the efforts to combat it."

"PM @narendramodi chaired a high-level meeting to review the ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19. Ways to further strengthen India’s preparedness were discussed," PMO tweeted.

He urged individuals, local communities and organisations in chalking out mechanisms to fight the COVID-19 menace.

Liquor shops, beer bars, restaurants, paan kiosks closed in Nagpur till Mar 31

In view of the Coronavirus outbreak and to prevent the spread of the virus, all beer bars, liquor shops, restaurants and even ‘paan’ stalls in the city would remain closed till March 31, a press release issued by district collector Ravindra Thakre said here on Wednesday.

According to the release, the order would come into effect from 1700 hours on Wednesday.

"All beer shops, wine shops, permit rooms, bars and restaurants, clubs, country liquor shops, all restaurants and even ‘paan’ kiosks will remain closed from March 18 to March 31 under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005," the order stated.

So far four positive cases of Covid-19 have been reported here. The first patient is undergoing treatment at IGGMC and three patients are being treated in GMC.

Kolkata: Covid-19 infected youth's parents, drivers test negative for novel coronavirus

West Bengal's first and so far only Covid-19 infected youth's father, mother and two drivers, who came in contact with him, tested negative for novel coronavirus, officials confirmed on Wednesday late evening.

According to reports, swab samples of those four persons, who are kept in hospital isolation, were sent to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) and all were found negative for Covid-19 after the first test.

"Though these four persons have tested negative for novel coronavirus, they will be kept in quarantine for next 14 days and their samples will be tested again within this period," a senior official in the state health department said.

Earlier on Tuesday, an 18-year-old student of the Oxford University, who came back from the UK on Sunday, tested positive for Covid-19, making it the first case in Kolkata as well as West Bengal.
Later it was revealed that the youth ignored doctors' advice to visit Beliaghata ID hospital, and visited multiple locations, including a shopping mall, restaurant and club, across the city and met few people.

Assam government bans visitors entry in Janata Bhawan till March 31

As a precautionary step to prevent the outbreak of deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Assam government on Wednesday decided to ban the visitors' entry in the Janata Bhawan (Assam Secretariat) till March 31.

In an order issued by the Secretariat Administration (Nazarat) department on Wednesday, it has been stated that, in view of the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country, it is necessary to restrict gathering in public places as well as office premises.

“Considering all other aspects and as a preventive measure, it has been decided that no visitor passes including e-passes will be issued till March 31. The visitors are advised to consider their concerned officers of their respective departments over telephone/e-mails for any urgent communication,” said the order copy.

Earlier, the Assam government had ordered to shut down all educational institutions, gyms, swimming pools and cinema halls of the state till March 31 as a precautionary measure to check community transmission of the deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The state government has also taken a decision to close all the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, zoological parks and protected areas in the state till March 29.

Enter battle mode, Centre tells Indian Army after soldier tests positive for COVID-19

Hours after an Indian Army personnel tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Centre has instructed the forces to go into "battle mode."

An advisory has been issued by the government to the soldiers detailing their roles and responsibility in containing the spread of a virus further.

The Indian Army comprises of at least 10 lakh men and women, posted across the country including remote hilly terrains of Jammu and Kashmir and Naxal-hit areas.

"It is a big challenge to keep the force healthy, as most stay in barracks and move around in troops," a senior ministry official reportedly said.

Personnel have been directed not to travel and stay in assigned locations.

The Centre on Wednesday informed that 276 Indians have been infected with the deadly Novel Coronavirus abroad with most of them staying in Iran followed by UAE and Italy, media reports said.

In a written reply to a question in Parliament's lower house Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, said out of 276 people, 255 are in Iran, 12 in UAE, five in Italy and one each in Hong Kong, Kuwait, Rwanda and Sri Lanka.

Kolkata: Covid-19 infected youth's family members kept in isolation, swab samples sent for test

Six persons, who came in contact with West Bengal's first and so far only Covid-19 positive patient, have been shifted to the isolation ward of Kolkata's Beliaghata ID hospital from a quarantine facility in Rajarhat on Wednesday morning, officials said.

According to senior officials of state health and family welfare department, the 18-year-old youth, who tested positive for novel coronavirus on Tuesday, is undergoing treatment in a modern isolation ward at Beliaghata ID hospital and his health condition is stable while these six persons, including his father, mother and two drivers, have been kept under surveillance in other isolation wards in the same hospital.

"Swab samples of the six persons have been sent to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) for Covid-19 test and we are waiting for its report which is expected tonight," a health official said.

Meanwhile, staffers of state secretariat, Nabanna, on Wednesday morning sterilized the entire building, including gates, lifts, floors and stairs, as the Covid-19 infected teenager's mother is a top government official working as a special secretary of a department and she came to her chamber at Nabanna's fifth floor on Monday after coming in contact with her son.

Five colleagues of the official, who came in contact with her at Nabanna on Monday, have reportedly been sent to home isolation while the officer's chamber has been sealed.

Earlier on Sunday wee hours, the youth, who is a student of Oxford University, arrived in Kolkata from London via Mumbai and medical officers reportedly detected nothing suspicious in his body during thermal imaging process at both the Indian airports.

Vietnam's Health Ministry has registered another case of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which makes the overall number 67, the state-run Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported on Wednesday.

The patient is a 36-year-old Vietnamese national who has recently come back from Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Vietnam has stopped issuing visas to foreign citizens for 30 days starting Wednesday.

All foreigners who are eligible for a visa-free entry are now obligated to provide a negative COVID-19 test result to the immigration authorities.

According to the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Hanoi, the local authorities in several provinces have ordered hotels to stop providing rooms to foreigners.

Senior officials of West Bengal's Health and Family Welfare department on Tuesday night confirmed that an 18-year-old youth from south Kolkata, who recently returned from England, has tested positive for Covid-19, making it the first case in the state. According to reports, the youth returned from the UK on Sunday (Mar 15) and after falling sick, he was admitted to the isolation ward of Beliaghata ID hospital with Covid-19-like syndromes on Monday (Mar 16).

Nagaland bans entry of foreign-domestic tourists from tomorrow

As a precautionary step to prevent the outbreak of deadly novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Nagaland government on Monday decided to bar the entry of any foreign or domestic tourist in the state from Mar 18.

The decision was taken by the Nagaland government during a high-level meeting in presence of Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio here.

In an office memorandum, the state Home department stated that, the entry of any foreign or domestic tourist shall remain barred in the state of Nagaland from Mar 18 until further orders.

“Issue of new/fresh Inner Line Permits for tourists (Domestic/Foreigners) and all other categories shall remain suspended with immediate effect until further orders,” the office memorandum stated.

On the other hand, the state government has also taken a decision to shut down all educational institutions and university in the state from Mar 7 to Apr 12.

Maharashtra govt to stamp those under home quarantine

In a step taken to fight the COVID19 outbreak in the state, Maharashtra government on Monday said those people who are undergoing home quarantine for suspected exposure to the novel Coronavirus will be stamped on the left hand, media reports said.

All national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, zoo in Assam to remain closed till Mar 29

As a precautionary measure to check the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the Assam government has taken a decision to keep all the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, zoological parks and protected areas  closed till Mar 29.

In an order issued by the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Wildlife & Chief Wildlife Warden on Sunday stated that, to prevent any accidental spread of COVID-19 virus in the zoological Parks and Protected areas of the state, it is notified that the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, Guwahati shall remain closed to visitors with immediate effect till Mar 29, 2020.

The order also stated that, all the Tiger Reserves, National Parks and Sanctuaries of the state shall remain closed to visitors with effect from Mar 17, 2020 till Mar 29, 2020.
“All the permissions granted under Section 28 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 for Film shooting/Research etc shall also remain suspended till 29th March, 2020 with immediate effect,” the order copy stated.

All educational institutions in West Bengal to remain closed till Apr 15

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said all educational institutions in the state will remain closed till Apr 15 over the Novel Coronavirus outbreak.

Addressing a press conference at state headquarters Nabanna here, Banerjee said, "The educational institutions were announced to be closed till Mar 31. Considering the jump in the positive cases in the country, we have decided to keep all schools, colleges and university to remain suspended till Apr 15."

The state government on Saturday had ordered the closure of all government, government-aided and private educational institutions till Mar 31.

Banerjee also said her government was urging all cinema halls to remain closed till Mar 31.

"There will be no harm in keeping cinema halls and all closed for now," the Chief Minister said.

VBSPU gears up to prevent Coronavirus

Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University here on Monday directed the colleges to keep soaps, tissue papers and alcohol-based sanitizers in the examination hall as part of the precautionary measure against the deadly coronavirus.

Registrar Sujit Kumar Jaiswal here said that all the colleges have been informed through a letter that pre-scheduled examinations will continue.

West Bengal on Saturday ordered a closure of all government, government-aided and private educational institutions between Mar 16-31 amid the outbreak of the deadly Novel Coronavirus.

The internal examinations of the educations institutions will also remain suspended.

However, the board examinations will be held as per schedule.

The government has issued a statement which reads, "In view of the evolving situation on the spread of Novel Corona virus (COVID-19), the advisories issued by WHO, UN and Central Government and as a matter of abundant precaution to check its spread in the State of West Bengal, it has been decided that all Government, Government-aided, private educational institutions - Schools, Colleges, Universities, Madrasahs, SSK/MSK will remain closed from 16 March, 2020 to 31 March, 2020 in public interest."

In an interaction with a Bengali news channel, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "There is nothing to panic but we have taken a precautionary measure. We will review the situation on Mar 30 and take further step."

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted, "As a precautionary measure against spread of #CoronaVirus, State govt has decided that all schools, colleges, coaching centres, gymnasium, movie theatres & theatre halls will remain closed till 30th March. A 69-year-old woman died of Coronavirus in Delhi on Friday, taking the coronavirus death toll to two in the country, government said in a statement. 

The woman was the sixth case of coronavirus to be reported from the national capital. She was suffering from other health conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes. According to reports, she had visited her son in Switzerland during Feb 5-22.

Delhi government says no to IPL matches

Even though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to take a decision on the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in the wake of the deadly Novel Coronavirus outbreak, the Delhi government on Friday cleared that no match of the mega tournament will be held in the national capital.

The decision has been announced by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Sisodia has also said no sporting event and conference will be held in Delhi as a preventive measure.

He has urged people to avoid gatherings.

Bachchan on Thursday late night tweeted a video to share the poem with his fans.

"Lot of discussions are taking place over Coronavirus. People are suffering huge losses and are also very worried. So I thought of saying something regarding Coronavirus outbreak this morning. I wrote a few lines and thought of sharing with you all," Bachchan said before saying the lines.

The release date of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar starrer upcoming Hindi film Sooryavanshi has been postponed over the outbreak of the deadly Novel Coronavirus.

The decision was announced by Akshay himself on Thursday.

Akshay took to Twitter to say, "We have been excited as you are to present the film to you and your family, but due to the recent outburst of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we, the makers, have decided to postpone the release of your film Sooryavanshi, keeping in mind the health and safety of our beloved audience... And therefore, Sooryavanshi will be back for you just when the time is right..."

The film was earlier slated to release on Mar 24.

Sooryavanshi, which is director Rohit Shetty's fourth installment of his Police Universe, also stars actress Katrina Kaif in the lead role.

Stock market recovers after initial fall

The BSE Sensex and NIFTY recovered after the stock market, which continued to bleed even in the morning, reopened followed by a 45-minute trading halt on Friday morning.

In the morning, Sensex fell by over 3,000 points immediately after the opening bell amid the Novel Coronavirus scare.

Following the steep downfall, the trading was halted for 45 minutes.

Sensex is now up by over 500 points, NIFTY by over 100 points.

The 76-year-old man from Karnataka's Kalburgi, who died on Tuesday, had been infected with the deadly novel Coronavirus, the state health minister said on Thursday, as India registered its first death from the deadly virus that has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

India to set up coronavirus test labs for Indian nationals in Italy

Italy extends emergency measures to fight against Coronavirus

In an attempt to fight against rising coronavirus deaths in the country, the Italian government has extended its  emergency measures which include travel restrictions and a ban on public gatherings in the country, media reports said. 

Country's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Monday directed people to stay home and seek permission for essential travel.

In a TV address, he said the measures were taken by the government to protect the most vulnerable.

Civil Protection Chief and Coronavirus Emergency Commissioner Angelo Borrelli told ANSA news agency that 463 people have died in Italy after contracting the virus, up 97 on Sunday.
He told the news agency 7,985 are ill with the coronavirus in Italy, up 1,598 on Sunday.
