Why Apple chose Google — its major rival — to power its next-gen AI?

Tech majors Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technology.

“These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming later this year,” Google said in a blog post announcing the partnership.

Following what it described as a careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for its Apple Foundation Models and said it is enthusiastic about the new user experiences the collaboration is expected to unlock.

Despite the partnership, Apple said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, while maintaining the company’s industry-leading privacy standards.

The deal drew immediate reaction from Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, who warned that it would further entrench Google’s dominance in the technology sector.

Responding directly to Google’s announcement on X, Musk wrote: “This seems like an unreasonable concentration of power for Google, given that they also have Android and Chrome.”
