Srinagar introduces e-cycles to transform urban transportation and reduce carbon emissions

Srinagar/IBNS: Srinagar has embraced the e-cycle revolution. Under the Srinagar Smart City Project, authorities have approved the introduction of electric bicycles, or e-cycles, as a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Led by Sheikh Yameen, co-founder of Curve Electric, a collaboration with Srinagar Smart City (SSC), the initiative aims to address the rising pollution and traffic congestion caused by increased tourism, reported Greater Kashmir.

The innovative idea of introducing e-cycles as a convenient and eco-friendly transportation solution has gained approval from SSC authorities.

To kickstart the initiative, Yameen and his team have set up e-cycle rental stations strategically located near popular tourist spots, markets, and transportation hubs. Currently, there are four functional docking stations with 200 e-cycles available for use.

As the city's smart city project progresses, an additional 25 docking stations will be installed, making 200 e-cycles accessible throughout Srinagar.

The introduction of e-cycles has received positive feedback from both locals and tourists. With features such as zero emissions, pedal-assist capabilities, and scenic riding experiences, people are embracing the e-cycle revolution as a greener mode of transportation.

The prices, although slightly higher than e-rickshaws, offer a balance between speed and safety, encouraging a healthier lifestyle while reducing traffic congestion.

Srinagar's e-cycles have already garnered significant interest, with 3,700 registrations and over 67,000 km traveled since the test run began in December 2022.

Local resident Anas Khan expressed his initial skepticism, but now enjoys riding the e-cycles, particularly near the beautiful Dal Lake.

Anshul, a tourist from Bihar, praised the unique experience of exploring Srinagar on an e-cycle, suggesting that expanding docking stations throughout the city would attract more visitors and alleviate traffic congestion.

Yameen emphasizes that widespread adoption of e-cycles in Srinagar could have a significant positive impact on the environment, potentially reducing 750 metric tons of carbon emissions per year—equivalent to planting 330,000 trees.

The initiative marks a step toward a greener future and reflects the city's commitment to progress and sustainable development.
