People hardly know about true meaning of health: Milind Soman

Kolkata, Mar 7 (IBNS): Former supermodel and fitness expert Milind Soman has said that he has always been inspired by women in life as he attended an event in the eastern city ahead of Pinkathon, India’s biggest women’s run founded by him.

Pinkathon is expanding its national footprint and at the event "Walking Warriors: Women of Today" here it announced its debut run in Kolkata to be held on March 26 next.

“I have learnt a lot from all women including  my mother and sisters,” Soman added speaking at JW Marriott here on Saturday.

Speaking about fitness of women, Soman said: “We need to spread awareness about women’s health as many people hardly know the true meaning of health.”

Milind shared his experience about 2003 Mumbai marathon where he ran for about 21 kms which he thinks to be an inspiration for many people to run.

Though he is hopeful about women’s awareness regarding fitness, Soman claimed that he had witnessed only 5-6% women taking part in 2003 Mumbai marathon.

Regarding the initiative by Pinkathon, Ranju Alex, GM of JW Marriott Kolkata and a strong advocate of women's empowerment, said: “It is definitely a good platform. I want to associate myself with all the programmes that they undertake.”

The Pinkathon, which has been founded by Milind Soman with Reema Sanghavi, is organised by the United Sisters Foundation. It is created with the specific purpose of getting more and more women to adopt a fitter lifestyle for themselves and their families, and to highlight the need for increased awareness other issues that put women’s life at risk.

West Bengal Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare and Social Welfare Dr. Sashi Panja at the event said there are hurdles for women in achieving fitness because of family responsibilities.

“We women are warriors. We fight since the time we take birth. It is our nature to keep the family together and then step out of the home,” she said.

Soman said that “every woman must live up to their potentials.”

The debut run of the Pinkathon would take place at Maidan, Kolkata.
