Kolkata, Sep 8 (IBNS): Veteran singer Haimanti Shukla, an exponent of classical and modern songs, rued the lack of classically trained vocalists, while santoor maestro Tarun Bhattacharya said the inclination to learn singing from You Tube is a dangerous trend among today's youth.

They were speaking at a music album launch recently in Kolkata.

Shukla was therefore all praises for Ivy Banerjee, a classical vocalist, whose debut album was released by Raga Music.

The album named “Divine Melody” is a compilation of traditional classical songs infused with contemporary sound-scapes and has been arranged by GIMA Award winning Tabla exponent, Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee.

The album includes traditional classical Hindi songs -- ‘Rangi Saree’ (Pahadi), ‘Garmiye Hasrate’ (Ghazal), ‘Allah Jane’ (Bandish), ‘Kaise Kare Barjori’ (Thumri), and ‘Ras Bhare Tore Nayan’ (Bhairavi Thumri).

Arranger Prodyut Mukherjee  not only praised Ivy Banerjee but also said that Banerjee will surely go far in her career if she continues with her endeavour.

Mukherjee also praised Raga Music and the support they have offered.

Ivy Banerjee said, “It was such an enriching experience to work with Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee. We have put in a lot of effort and I hope the audiences will enjoy the music.”

Ivy Banerjee is a Hindustani classical vocalist. She has been training since the age of 3. Her first music teacher was her mother and then she went to learn music from professional classical singers.

Banerjee is the recipient of the National Scholarship from Govt. of India, Thumri, 2003, gold medal in All India Radio Competition in the year 2001 and also received the Best Debut Female singer from Radio Mirchi Music Award in 2015 for the film ‘Pendulam’.

Also present at the album launch, held in ICCR Kolkata, were fashion designer Sharbari Datta, dancer Alokananda Roy, Debashish Kumar, MMIC, Parks & Gardens, Sports & Advertisement & Car Parking, Sujoy Chandra, IPS, Joint Commissioner Police Lal Bazar and Santoor Maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya.

Santoor maestro Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya spoke on the importance of learning classical music.

He said, “Today kids are calling themselves singers by learning songs from YouTube. This is not a good practice, whoever wants to learn music should learn classical music first. Then you can sing whatever genre you want to.”

Talking about Banerjee, he said, “She has a lovely voice but in today’s world you need to know how to market yourself and if you can do that you are good to go.”

“Divine Melody” is priced at 300 INR and will be available across all retail outlets and leading online platforms.
