India is no longer a poor country, must take bold steps in AI: Google DeepMind’s Dr. Manish Gupta

Mumbai: India is no longer a poor country and must take decisive steps in advancing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, said Dr. Manish Gupta, Senior Director at Google DeepMind.

Speaking on the theme ‘Transforming India with AI: Why We Need More Data,' at the ABP Network’s Ideas of India 2025 summit, Dr. Gupta emphasised the need for India to develop its own foundational AI models.

“Some assume that building foundational AI models requires hundreds of millions of dollars, but we must have the courage to take on challenges that have never been attempted before,” he said, highlighting India's potential in the AI landscape.

Dr. Gupta noted that AI, though an old discipline, has gained momentum due to innovations like the transformer architecture, which has enabled powerful models such as ChatGPT.

“AI is accelerating progress on a range of critical problems, from drug discovery and plastic pollution to structural biology. Innovations like AlphaFold are helping us solve complex scientific challenges faster than ever before,” he added.

Discussing AI’s role in language and culture, Dr. Gupta stressed the importance of inclusivity in AI development.

“We are focused on building the best multimodal representation for 100+ Indic languages, ensuring AI development is inclusive and supports India's linguistic diversity. Multicultural AI models will shape the future of technology,” he said.

He also underscored the need for responsible AI, ensuring it benefits everyone, not just a select few.

On AI’s ethical concerns and emotional understanding, Dr. Gupta acknowledged its limitations.

“AI is biased because it is built by humans, and we carry our biases into these systems. The reality is that AI still struggles to understand emotions like love,” he noted.

While AI can assist artists in exploring new genres, he asserted that “when it comes to competition, humans will always win. AI can hallucinate, but human creativity and intuition will always have the upper hand.”

The Ideas of India 2025 summit, themed ‘Humanity’s Next Frontier,’ brought together thought leaders and innovators to discuss India's role in shaping the future amid climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and technological advancements.

The two-day event featured discussions on science, medicine, social structures, and global leadership, with experts offering bold visions for a sustainable and inclusive future.
