Internet search giant Google has announced the rollout of a state-of-the-art text translation feature in Search and the Translate app, powered by its Gemini AI.

“This means you’ll get much smarter, more natural, and accurate text translations wherever you’re searching. We’re also launching a new beta version of live translation, bringing real-time, natural-sounding translations directly to your headphones using Gemini’s native speech-to-speech capabilities,” the company said in a blog post.

Google also said it is adding support for more languages to help users practice and communicate more effectively in the Translate app.

“Starting today, Google Translate leverages advanced Gemini capabilities to provide improved translations for phrases with nuanced meanings, including idioms, local expressions, and slang,” the blog stated.

The update has been rolled out in the U.S. and India, enabling translations between English and nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German, across the Translate app (Android and iOS) and the web.

Building on Gemini’s live speech-to-speech translation technology, Google is introducing a beta experience that allows users to hear real-time translations through their headphones. The feature preserves the tone, emphasis, and cadence of each speaker, creating more natural translations and making it easier to follow conversations.
