Bijoya Dutt performs 'Rhythmic Maharis' in Kolkata
The story of Maharis or Devdasis and their resolute devotion towards Lord Jagannath was portrayed through a fusion of classical and Bollywood themes.
Mahari , a millennium old dance form, is a ritualistic dance form from Odisha that used to be performed at the temple of Lord Jagannath at Puri by devadasi dancers called maharis. Following the abolition of the Devadasi System the dance has been discontinued at the Jagannath Temple. The Mahari dance spurred the development of both Odissa and Gotipua dance forms of Odissa. After the abolition of the Devadasi system, the dance form got marginalized.
As the light and sound effect brilliantly enlivened the abode of Jagannath on stage, the ballerinas danced gracefully with the 'Tal' unfolding the tale with the 'Mudras' or gestures of their hands.
The dance-drama directed by Bijoya Dutt herself, received accolades from guest of honour, Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Abida Islam.
Appreciating the endeavour, the Deputy High Commissioner said, "It is great to be a part of this evening. Odyssy is very much present and popular in Bangladesh. More and more young girls are taking to this art form in my country. Such performances as these should be encouraged and promoted by the governments."
