Bankura University launches Santali-language UG programmes for tribal students

| @indiablooms | Jul 07, 2025, at 10:33 am

Kolkata/IBNS: The Junglemahal area of Bankura is inhabited by a large number of Santals who have passed the 10th and 12th grades in Santali vernacular mode.

These students may not be able to access the fruits of higher education unless taught in their own vernacular language.

Inspired by the advice and initiative of the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, Bankura University has opened a special undergraduate  wing (UG) for teaching and learning in the Santali language mode.

The university has taken decisive initiatives for the development of the indigenous populace of the Junglemahal region.

As per the New Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programme, UGC 2022 (under NEP 2020), a 4-year undergraduate programme (Hons./Hons. with Research) with “UG Degree Programmes with Single Major” has been implemented from the academic year 2023–24.

Bankura University is currently offering 4-year undergraduate programmes in the Santali vernacular with the following majors and corresponding minor courses to promote the Santali language and culture and to empower the indigenous people: philosophy, geography, mathematics, and physics.

The eligibility for admission to the 1st year, 1st semester, is the successful completion of 10th and 12th grades or an equivalent stage of education from any recognised board/council/university.

The intake capacity major-wise is as follows: Physics – 28, Mathematics – 28, Geography – 60, and Philosophy – 60.

Reservation of seats is as per the orders, notifications, and extant rules issued by the Government of West Bengal.

For admission to the undergraduate course, there should not be a gap of more than 3 years between the year of the Higher Secondary Examination and the year of admission.

No deduction in marks will be made for candidates who passed in previous years.
