A photo exhibition in Kolkata introduces viewers to the roots of Mexican gastronomy

Kolkata, Sep 10 (IBNS): Hundreds of plants, flowers and fruits from Mesoamerica form the basis of today’s Mexican gastronomy but not many outside the nation are aware of it.

Many of these ingredients spread throughout the world but have become so integrated with local cuisine that memories of the origin have faded away.

Therefore, a recent photo exhibition called 'Seeds of Identity -- 31 Foods Mexico Gave the World' held in Kolkata as part of Mexico's Independence Day celebrations, was an eye opener for many.

Inaugurated by Mexico's Ambassador to India, Melba Pria, the exhibition at ICCR in Kolkata was also attended by Sumit Mazumdar -- Honorary Consul of Mexico in Kolkata and Goutam De -- Regional Director ICCR.

Captured by photographers Ariadna Cuadrielloy and Juan Pablo Cardona, the pictures showcased a crisp compilation of a significant part of the flora out of which Mexican culture evolved.

The exhibition described the flora of Mexico through the voices of the first chroniclers and of curious, astonished travelers, and through a selection of images that showed the natural beauty of the Mexican culture.

The exhibition was an introductory guide for those who wondered where certain foods came from, and why they have been and continue to be vitally important to Mexico.

The exhibition will draw to a close on Sep 12.
