UK kickstarts 'booster shot' trials with seven different Covid-19 vaccines: Report
London/IBNS: As fight against coronavirus is prolonged, mainly due to the more dangerous new variants of the contagion, the United Kingdom launched a nationwide study on Wednesday to find safety and efficacy of a third dose "booster" shot of Covid-19 vaccines in strengthening immunity against the deadly virus, according to a Reuters report.
The study will have 3,000 participants, who have already taken the two doses of coronavirus vaccine, and examine the effect of a third dose across seven different vaccines, the report said, adding that some of these vaccines are already in use while others are in the process of development.
The new study aims at exploring the possibility of a booster inoculation ahead of winter after initially targetting immunisation of the entire adult population with a two dose schedule by summer, the report informed.
The vaccines included in the trial are Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna COVID-19 shots, which are already being administered in Britain, as well as vaccines from Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Valneva and CureVac which the country will source in future, it said.
British health minister Matt Hancock said that the data accumulated in the trial will help shape the government to devise the plan for the booster programme later this year, the report added.
