UK : 27 contact lenses found in woman's eye

London, July 16 (IBNS): In a bizarre incident, an eye specialist in the UK found 27 contact lenses stuck in the eye of a woman, media reports said.

The woman was due to have a cataract surgery, reports said.

It was Indian-origin Rupal Morjaria, a trainee ophthalmologist at Solihull Hospital near Birmingham, who first discovered 17 contact lens in the eye of the woman.

Later, 10 more lens were found in the eye of the 67-year-old woman.

Rupal Morjaria told  Optometry Today: "None of us have ever seen this before."

She said: "It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together. We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there."

However, the 67-year-old woman's cataract surgery has been postponed.

“Because she had harboured these contact lenses in her eye for an unknown length of time, if we had operated she would have had a lot of bacteria around her conjunctiva,” said Morjaria.

The patient did not report any problems due to the presence of so many lenses in her eyes.

“She was quite shocked. When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye,” Morjaria shared.
