Moscow/IBNS: Health officials in Russia have approved a single-dose version of its Covid vaccine Sputnik V, reports said on Thursday.

Sputnik Light "demonstrated 79.4 per cent efficacy" compared to 91.6 per cent for the two-shot Sputnik V, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which financed the vaccine, said in a statement.

The results have been drawn from data taken over a span of 28 days after the injection was administered as part of Russia's mass vaccination program. The same happened between Dec 5, 2020, and April 15, 2021.

Sputnik V has been approved for use in over 60 countries.

However, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not provided their approval for the Russian made vaccine.

Sputnik V, developed by Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia, has been approved for use in India.

Five million doses of Sputnik V are expected to arrive in India by June.
