Over 34,000 children below 18 years infected with COVID-19 in Assam during second wave

Guwahati: Assam has recorded an alarming trend of COVID-19 infections among the children and teenagers below 18 years in the second wave of the Coronavirus.

According to the National Health Mission, Assam data, nearly 50 percent more children and teenagers below 18 years have been infected with COVID-19 in the second wave compared to the first wave.

The number of COVID-19 infected children and teenagers between the age group of 0-18 years was 17457 in the first wave, which has increased to 34606 in the second wave.

In a release issued by National Health Mission, Assam stated that, from April 1 to June 26 this year, the total number of COVID-19 infected persons in the state has been 2,80,504 and out of these, 34606 within the age group of 0-18 years were found infected with COVID-19.

Out of the infected children and teenagers, 5755 cases belonged to less than 5 years and 28851 to 6-18 years age group and the state has reported 34 deaths.

Many of them having co morbidities like congential diseases – heart, kidney, rare malformations etc, especially among less than 5 years.

The National Health Mission, Assam data showed that, Kamrup (Metro) district has the highest caseload with 5346 children were found infected with COVID-19 and this stands 10.04 percent of the total caseload in the district (53251 cases).

On the other hand, Dibrugarh district has registered 2430 cases followed by 2288 cases in Nagaon district, 2023 cases in Kamrup (Rural) district, 1839 cases in Sonitpur district.
