Mumbai records 602 fresh COVID-19 cases, PM Modi holds review meeting amid Omicron spread

Mumbai/IBNS: Mumbai recorded 602 fresh cases of COVID-19 and one death on Thursday raising concern as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to review the preparations to contain the Omicron variant.

Mumbai registered the highest single-day spike in 77 days. On Oct 6, the city reported 629 cases.

The number of active patients is currently 2,813 and the positivity rate is 1.52 per cent. Over the last 24 hours, 39,423 tests have been conducted.

Across Maharashtra, 23 new cases of Omicron were reported on Thursday. Of these, 13 were in Pune, five in Mumbai and two in Osmanabad. Thane, Nagpur and Mira-Bhayandar had one case each.

Meanwhile, PM Modi chaired a review meeting after his return from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi.

In the meeting, Modi urged for more caution, testing and vaccinations.

India has recorded 259 cases of COVID-19's Omicron variant across 16 states and Union Territories so far.
