A male leopard was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Cherambadi Forest Range in Gudalur forest division in the hilly Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

Forst department officials suspected that the carnivore would have been poisoned.

Department officials said the leopard's visceral organs were sent for lab tests. The real cause of the death could be ascertained only after the reports are received.

They said the carcass of the leopard had few injuries which might have caused during a fight with another carnivore.

However, it seemed unlikely that the death could have been caused due to the injuries.

The forest department officials are investigating the cause of the death of the leopard.
