Kerala entry delayed, but Monsoon now advances into additional parts of India, says IMD
The Southwest Monsoon, which arrived in Kerala on June 4 after a delayed onset, has further advanced into additional parts of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
According to the IMD, the monsoon has progressed into parts of west-central and the entire northeast Bay of Bengal, as well as several areas of the northwest Bay of Bengal. It has also covered the entire states of Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, along with parts of Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The weather department said conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the Southwest Monsoon over the next 3–4 days. It is likely to move into additional parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the southwest Bay of Bengal. Further progression is also expected into parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the remaining northeastern states, and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
The IMD reported that very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Kerala.
Heavy rainfall, in the range of 7–11 cm, was also observed at isolated locations across Lakshadweep, Odisha, East Rajasthan, Konkan and Goa, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rayalaseema, Coastal Karnataka, North and South Interior Karnataka, Assam, and Manipur.
The IMD further noted that hailstorms occurred at isolated places in Odisha, while heatwave conditions persisted in isolated pockets over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
