Moscow/Sputnik/UNI: Three additional people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Japan, and they are located in the western prefecture of Wakayama, the national NHK broadcaster reported on Tuesday, citing local health officials.

One patient is under 20 years old, the youngest person to catch the disease in the country to date, the media said.

According to the broadcaster, the new cases bring the total number of infected persons in Japan to 523, including the cases detected on the Diamond Princess cruise liner, which has been docked and quarantined near Yokohama port since February 3 — a precaution taken after a passenger who left the vessel in Hong Kong tested positive for the virus. Off the ship, the number of confirmed cases in Japan is over 60.

The new strain of coronavirus, recently dubbed COVID-19, was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan last December and has since spread to more than 20 countries. The virus has already resulted in over 1,800 fatalities, with over 73,000 people having been infected.
