India's vaccination unlikely to pick up in July as claimed by Centre: Reports

| @indiablooms | Jun 29, 2021, at 03:09 am

New Delhi/IBNS: Even as the Centre has informed the Supreme Court that it is going to increase COVID vaccine supply for July but government data suggests it may fall short of its daily vaccination targets.

Twelve crore vaccine doses have been assigned to states and Union Territories for July, the government told the Supreme Court in an affidavit on Saturday.

These include 10 crore doses of Serum Institute of India's Covishield and two crore doses of Bharat Biotech's Covaxin.

This shows that less than 40 lakh doses are administered every day, which is significantly lower than the target of about 1 crore doses.

The Centre's statement, therefore, raises questions on its target on meeting vaccine needs in order to avoid the third wave of Covid.

In a presentation last month, the Union Health Ministry had stated that over 216 crore doses would be available by the year-end.
