Get back to work in four hours: Mamata tells striking doctors

Kolkata, Jun 13 (IBNS/UNI): Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who paid a visit to state-run SSKM hospital this morning, issued a four-hour ultimatum to striking doctors in West Bengal to get back to work.

The doctors have been on strike in protest against an attack on their colleague, which has virtually brought medical services in government hospitals across the state to a halt.

The agitating doctors raised slogan like ''We want justice'' in front of Mamata.

The OPDs in government hospitals were shut for 12 hours because of the protest, which was triggered following an assault of a junior doctor at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on Monday night by the family members of a deceased patient.

The CM said the doctors who don't report to work must leave the hostel. "They are outsiders. The government will not support them in any way. I condemn doctors who have gone on strike. Policemen die in line of duty but the police don't go on a strike," she said.

“The state spends Rs 25 lakh on each doctor and then they shirk work. This won’t be tolerated," she said.

Reacting to Mamata's move, BJP leader Jay Prakash Majumdar said: "Mamata reacted exactly the way she is running the state -by threatening... The students needed compassion but she threatened them."

On Mamata's comment on the state funding the students, he said:  "Is she funding the students' education? It is the taxpayers' money which is used to fund their education. She is not lending her personal money."

CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya said: "Mamata is responsible for bringing the situation back to normal. She should have acted earlier."
