Thane/UNI:  A record 142 new COVID-19 cases were detected in this district taking the pandemic tally to 1,655 among which 44 patients have died, informed official data released on Thursday late night.

The new cases, including a toddler, six children aged below ten years and senior citizens, were mostly infected with the deadly virus in the cities of Thane and Navi Mumbai as well as suburbs of Kalyan and Mira Bhayander.

The steady rise in detection of the infected individuals from rural parts of Thane has worried the administration further.

In Thane, the hike in the count of cases was attributed to a funeral gathering as posthumous report of the deceased confirmed him to be a pandemic patient.

In the limits of Thane and Navi Mumbai civic bodies, there are 560 and 484 cases, respectively, while there were 253 and 202 infected individuals in the respective suburbs of Kalyan-Dombivili and Mira-Bhayandar, data apprised.

The remaining cases are from Thane Rural (65), Badlapur (42), Bhiwandi (20), Ulhasnagar (17) and Ambernath (12).

In distant Palghar district, tally of confirmed cases surged to 202, including 10 fatalities. Most of the cases were reported in the limits of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation.
