Ludhiana, Nov 24 (IBNS): At least five newborns died in a single day at a hospital in Punjab, media reports said.

The incident took place in less than a week after the new maternity ward was opened at the hospital by the state Health Minister.

Sources said the deaths reported on Sunday at the government-run Civil Hospital in Ludhiana.

Following the crisis, the state government ordered an investigation into the matter to find out how five out of 19 newborns died at the hospital’s newly-inaugurated medical facility.

The families of the deceased infant’s alleged negligence saying the deliveries were being performed by nurses.

Hospital sources, however, said all five cases were complicated. Two senior health officials will now investigate the issue, reports said.
