Assam reports first black fungus related death

Guwahati/IBNS: Assam reported its first black fungus death after a 27-year-old COVID-19 recovered patient died of mucormycosis infection at a private hospital in Guwahati.

The patient hailing from Assam’s Nagaon district died at Apollo hospitals in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The youth was also a diabetic and tested positive for COVID-19 on May 6. He was admitted in a COVID-19 care center at Nagaon.

On May 12, he tested Covid-negative in Rapid Antigen Test and was discharged from the COVID care center.

Three days later, he developed decreased vision in both eyes and other post Covid complications at his home

He was rushed to emergency of Apollo hospitals, Guwahati, in a very critical state, the next day, the hospital said in a statement.

"He was duly attended to by team of physicians and admitted for ICU care on May 16," it said.

“The necessary investigations along clinical lines were sent and treatment was started under team of intensivists and consultants from other super specialties. The patient was diagnosed as Covid related rhino-cerebral mucormycosis with diabetic ketoacidosis and complications leading to multi organ failure. In spite of the best efforts by the clinical team the patient expired on May 19,” the statement added.
