As ministers talk about end of pandemic, IMA warns against 'unauthorized political statements'

New Delhi/IBNS: After statements by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain on nearing the "end of the pandemic", the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has cautioned politicians about not providing a "sense of false security".

"It is painful to note the discussion on endemic vs pandemic status of diseases is echoing in the political corridors, however it ought to be substantiated by scientific evidence by the World Health Organisation or ICMR only," the top medical body said in a statement.

Highlighting the deaths of 740 of its frontline workers due to COVID-19, the IMA has urged "fellow citizens to be vigilant" about wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing.

"The last one week has shown 35 to 40 per cent increase in the number of cases from different parts of the state and even in capital India the daily average has risen up from 100 to 140 patients," the IMA said.

"Let us not boast or trumpet ourselves," the association said, warning about "unauthorized political statements".

IMA's statement comes after Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said India is in the "endgame of the novel coronavirus pandemic" while Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the pandemic is nearing the endemic phase in the national capital.

The national capital reported 239 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the Delhi government said in a statement on Monday. Besides, three casualties were also recorded in the same period.

The fresh figures have taken the capital caseload to 6,41,340 while the death toll rose to 10,924.

Besides, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have been reporting a surge in the COVID daily new cases. They cumulatively account for 86.25% of the new cases reported in the past 24 hours.

18,599 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 11,141. It is followed by Kerala with 2,100 while Punjab reported 1,043 new cases.
