United States team to visit India for high-stakes trade deal talks next week

A US delegation led by its chief negotiator will visit India from June 1 to June 4 to discuss and finalise the details of an interim trade agreement between the two countries.

According to a government statement, the proposed discussions aim to finalise the Interim Agreement and advance negotiations under the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

“It is proposed to finalize the details of the Interim Agreement and take forward the negotiations under the broader BTA on multiple areas such as market access, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, investment promotion, and economic security alignment,” the statement said.

India and the United States had issued a joint statement on February 7, 2026, agreeing on a framework for an interim agreement focused on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade.

The framework also reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to wider negotiations under the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.

As part of the ongoing talks, an Indian delegation had visited Washington, D.C. from April 20 to April 23 for in-person meetings with US counterparts.

The upcoming visit by the US delegation comes just days after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded a four-day visit to India.

During delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, Rubio described the India-US relationship as one that goes far beyond traditional alliances.

“The US and India aren’t just allies. We are strategic allies and that’s of critical importance,” Rubio said, highlighting the growing depth of cooperation between the two countries across multiple global regions.

He added that while Washington works with many nations around the world, its partnership with India stands out because of its long-term strategic significance and expanding scope.

Rubio also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit. According to officials, the discussions focused on sustained progress in bilateral cooperation across several sectors.
