Kolkata/IBNS: The Republic of Malawi, located in the south-eastern part of Africa, opened its first consulate office in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Malawi is a landlocked African country and is a popular tourist destination.

Earlier, The Republic of Malawi had opened its consulate office in Mumbai.

Industrialist Vinod Dugar, co-promoter of RDB Group, has been appointed as the new Consul of Malawi in Kolkata.

Speaking on the occasion, Dugar told IBNS, "The consulate offices are virtually opened just to bridge the gap between the two countries. That is only the significance where both the countries can do a fellowship and bilateral business.

"Malawi is a virgin and an upcoming country. It got its Independence in the early 1960s. A lot of Indian companies are already persuaded towards Malawi and more than five thousand Indians are staying there. Basically there is a lot of significance, synergy which can give growth to both the countries."

"Kolkata is a place where business started. During the time of Britishers also, Kolkata was the business capital. So this is where persuasion is. A lot of traders are there who believe in spices and other products. We Bengalese love tourists," he added, commenting on why Kolkata has been chosen for the opening of the latest consulate office.
