Tesla to open first India showroom in Mumbai, deliveries of Model Y SUVs by August

New Delhi: Tesla, under the leadership of Elon Musk, is set to launch its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the development.

The move signals Tesla’s long-anticipated entry into India’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market.

Once operational, the Mumbai outlet will allow visitors to check vehicle prices, compare various models, and select preferred trims.

According to the report, customers will be able to begin configuring and placing orders for Tesla vehicles as early as next week.

The company’s initial shipment of vehicles for India — Model Y SUVs — has already arrived from its manufacturing facility in China, with deliveries expected to commence by the end of August.

Sources added that a second showroom is also in the works, likely to open in New Delhi by late July.

The development comes at a critical time for Tesla, which has witnessed a dip in sales across several international markets.

With India emerging as the world’s third-largest car market, Tesla is aiming to tap into a new base of EV buyers.

Although demand for electric vehicles is growing in the country, high import tariffs continue to pose a challenge to affordability.

The Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling EV globally, will serve as a key test for price sensitivity in India.

Given the 70% import duty on fully built cars priced below $40,000, the final cost of the Model Y in India is expected to be significantly higher than its US price of approximately $46,630.

Documents reviewed last month showed five Model Y SUVs were declared at roughly ₹27.7 lakh ($32,270) each, before duties and surcharges.

Sources noted that the first week of the Mumbai showroom’s launch will be reserved for VIPs and business partners, with public access beginning the following week.

Tesla has yet to make an official statement. However, for Indian EV enthusiasts who have waited for years, the launch brings them closer than ever to driving a Tesla.
